RTN’s Pop Quiz

Junior Radio/Television/Film major Danielle Tamburilla, who is also in the honors concentration, is one of the producers of the RTN game show Poppopquiz Quiz.

Pop Quiz was originally called School of Pop, which took place on a classroom-themed set. Danielle and her fellow producers, Junior RTF majors Jessica Howery and Maggie Walsh, took over the show last semester. They decided to change the show because as Danielle said, “We thought it needed a new face.”

Along with that new face, came a new host and new rules. Tim Ryan now hosts the pop culture themed game show. Danielle explained the new rules as follows:

We have on two new contestants every week and we ask them questions on topics in pop culture like reality television, movies, cartoons, celebrities, and music. There are three rounds: in the first round, contestants get 100 points for each one of their right answers. In the second round, contestants get 200 point for their right answers. In the final round, contestants get to wager their point on a final question and the winner gets a prize.

Pop Quiz shoots on Wednesdays from 1:30-3:00 pm and is always looking for contestants. To become a contestant, contact Danielle at danielleuniverse@gmail.com. All majors are welcome to participate in the show.

The show airs every Tuesday and Thursday at 9pm on RTN, which can be viewed on campus or at rtnch5.tv.

Check It Out Mate

The Bantivoglio Honors Concentration offers many clubs to honors students. Over the course of the year, I will do my best to feature each club at least once and explain what it does.

This week’s club is the chess club. Freshman Biology major Stephanie Mygas is the president. Her grandmother taught her how to play when Steph was in elementary school.

According to Steph, the typical game at Rowan lasts about 15-30 minutes. She also pointed out, “It depends on how much your concentrating and everyone’s skill level.”

Every Monday at 7:30, the honors chess club meets at the library in room 404. All skill levels are welcome. As Steph says, “Frankly, I can be pretty terrible at chess compared to some members, so if I discriminated I think I would be out. Half the fun is learning to play better and enhancing your mind.”

If you have any questions, contact Steph at mygass04@students.rowan.edu. To practice, click here.

Boggle Your Mind

The Bantivoglio Honors Concentration offers many clubs to honors students. Over the course of the year, I will do my best to feature each club at least once and explain what it does.

This week’s club is the Boggle Club. It was founded and is run by Sophomore Engineering Major Mia Korngruen. Mia started the club at the beginning of last year because her high school had a club and, as an avid Boggle player, she didn’t want to get rusty while at Rowan.

Mia said, “I visit my high school over breaks and play and they’re pretty competitive.  I also wanted to see if anyone around here loves Boggle and likes to play.  I had visions of a Boggle Army somewhere in there, but for some reason, no one in the Honors Concentration was quite so enthusiastic.”

Before you join Mia’s Boggle Army, and you know you want to, you must know the how the game is played.

The following is how Mia explains the game play:

The Boggle board is made of 16 dice.  Each die has six faces and on each face is a letter.  To begin, the dice are placed on the board and a cover is placed over them.  The board is shaken and the dice are arranged randomly on the board, creating a 4 by 4 letter grid like this:

A B C D
E F G H
I  J  K L
M N O P

Then all players have 3 minutes to make as many words as they can from the letters on the board.  However, the words can only be created from letters that are touching each other in the correct order, and the same die cannot be used in the same word twice.  Using the board above an as example, KNIFE is legal, FLAG and POP are not.  The words must be 3 or more letters.  Points are awarded only for words that a player finds that no other players have found.  The scoring goes like this:

3 and 4 letter words–1 pt
5 letter words–2 pts
6 letter words–3 pts
7 letter words–5 pts
8 or more letters–11 pts

Words are determined legal or illegal by the Scrabble Dictionary and because it is a “clean” game, no profanities are legal.

Since practicing once a week is not enough to become an expert Boggle player, the internet provides many handy sites to practice your Boggle skills. Mia recommends wordsplay.net (free registration required) or you can always go to the Hasbro’s official boggle site.

It doesn’t matter if you have or haven’t practiced; the Boggle Club is always looking for new members. For those interested, the Boggle Club meets every Tuesday at 9 pm in Campbell Library Room 404. If you have any questions, contact Mia at korngr56@students.rowan.edu.

Fun with Statues on Election Day

Tuesday was Election Day, a time for every American to perform their civic duty and vote. It is also a day that this honors student used to take a break from homework, grab a friend, and take silly photos with the statues spread around Rowan’s campus. These statues are part of the art exhibit called “Double Take: The Works of Seward Johnson.” The photos were taken for “On Camera, On Campus:  Double Take Photo Contest.” For more information click on the statues click here.
